  • Jordan is not a notable drug producing country, but it is known as an important narcotics transit country through which drugs produced illicitly elsewhere in the region flow.
  • According to anti-drug authorities in Jordan, the vast majority of illicit substances that enter the country are not consumed domestically and are instead sent on to other countries in the region and further afield.
  • Jordan has a relatively low level of drug abuse, but drugs most commonly abused by Jordanians are Cannabis, Heroin and the amphetamine Captagon.
  • 29 million Captagon tablets were seized by law enforcement authorities in Jordan in 2009.
  • UN research suggests that Jordan accounted for approximately 20% of amphetamine drug seizures in the Middle East/ South West Asia region in 2009.
  • Globally, Jordan had the fifth highest rate of Amphetamine seizures in 2009, accounting for 8% of the total.
  • According to official statistics in 1999, the most commonly abused drugs amongst those seeking treatment in rehabilitation facilities in Jordan were opioid drugs, such as Heroin, and Amphetamines. Amphetamines accounted for approximately 45% of treatment cases in that year, and opioids for almost 22%. 6% of drug treatment cases were for solvents and inhalants.
