Facts and stats

  • Drug use, possession and distribution are all punished severely in Kuwait, in the form of substantial prison sentences and monetary fines.
  • Alcohol is illegal in Kuwait and strictly prohibited for both Kuwaiti citizens and visitors. Its sale, importation, production or consumption are all punishable offences.
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol can result in immediate imprisonment.
  • Drug abuse is relatively rare in the country. In 2009 there were 197 reported cases of drug treatment in Kuwait.
  • Of these treatment cases, 31.2% were for opioid drugs.
  • 28.4% of treatments were for Cannabis.
  • 21.8% of recorded drug treatments in 2009 were for Amphetamines.
  • Approximately 16% of addiction treatment in Kuwait each year is for the abuse of prescription drugs such as tranquilizers and sedatives.
  • Drug use in Kuwait is more common amongst the affluent youth of the country.
  • In 2005, the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) estimated that 3.1% of the population aged between 15 and 64 had used Cannabis in the previous year.
