Facts and stats
Lebanon does not produce a substantial amount of illicit drugs domestically. It does however have internal drug problems in the form of abuse of Cannabis, Cocaine, Heroin and other drugs.
Illicit drugs, including Cocaine and Heroin, flow through the country on the way to other destinations, but not to the same extent as other countries in the region which are better known as drug transit countries.
In the first three quarters of 2011, anti-drug authorities in Lebanon reported seizing 130kg of Cannabis, and 57kg of Cocaine.
Some Cannabis growth does take place, but this is often eradicated or otherwise disrupted before it can reach domestic or international markets. In 2002, the yearly total for eradicated Cannabis crops stood at over 27,000 acres. Opium poppy eradication efforts meanwhile were estimated at a little over 2,000 acres.
Opioids are the most commonly abused drugs in Lebanon, accounting for an estimated 57% of drug addiction treatment demand according to UN figures.
Cannabis accounts for an estimated 32% of treatment demand.
